The Phenomenal Babiy Brothers Ukraine Trip

THE PHENOMENAL BABIJ BROTHER UKRAINE TRIP…that might not have happened

By David Babij

First, Brother James, the elder Babij, decided to make a 3rd trip to the “homeland”.  In conversation with Brother Dan in early 2019, James encourages Dan to consider going “home”.  Dan…who has never been farther away from MI than Cozumel or California, and has no passport or any clue as to what is involved.  Dan buys in to the plan, shops flight plans, applies for his passport.  In an email from James, the plan for the 2 brothers to go “home” is revealed to the rest of the clan.  David, the baby Babij, reads the email…the immediate reaction is “Oh hell no, if Dan is going then I am going too!!”Read more

The woman went on to describe what typically went on during such occasions: an exchange of tales relating to family lineage and history; performances of traditional folk songs and dance; picnics where participants cooked and ate traditional food like beet soup, pedaheh (pirogi or varenyky) dumplings and stuffed cabbage called holubtsi or “pigs in a blanket”, similar to those I’d tasted before that had been made by Grandma Anna; and Sunday excursions to the local Orthodox church for Mass.
