The Mitten

Every Michigander has done this at least a hundred times. Someone asks where you’re from, and instinctively, you hold up your right hand, point to a spot, and say “right here.” It’s universal. It doesn’t matter if you’re in Michigan or across the country. The hand comes out, and suddenly everyone understands.

This image maps out major Michigan cities on the hand, and it’s surprisingly accurate. Detroit is down at the base of the thumb. Lansing is in the middle of the palm. Traverse City is on the pinky. Sault Ste. Marie is at the tip of the index finger. Mackinac Island is right there on the side of the middle finger. It works.

The Upper Peninsula gets its own hand, which makes sense because it’s a separate landmass. The UP is the left hand, and you can point to Marquette, Houghton, Ironwood, and Escanaba just as easily. Two-handed Michigan geography. It’s efficient.
