When we first launched our WordPress CMS version of Ruthenians.net we were inundated with comment and contact spam. The spam managers that were offered by our web host worked somewhat for filtering out email traffic, but did nothing to prevent the mis-use of either our contact form page or comments feature by marketers and miscreants, especially those in Ukraine and Russia, perhaps because of our domain name. Then we happened upon the plugin CleanTalk. All we had to do was download, install and activate CleanTalk; get your trial access key; then spend a few minutes configuring it from within the WordPress plugin dashboard; save our settings; and CleanTalk went to work, filtering comments and logins as either “approved” (green) or “spam” (red). Clicking on an individual item allowed us to view the sender’s email and IP addresses, along with any login or message details so that we could decide whether or not to override CleanTalk’s filters. And did we mention you don’t need a CAPTCHA plugin to separate the bots from the “bros” with CleanTalk?
You get a trial period after which you’ll have to upgrade to a full license starting at only a few dollars per year per website. What a bargain!
After several months of futility, our friends in China, Ukraine and Russia have stopped trying.
