From small clubs in her native Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to venues like the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles, singer, songwriter Joni Mitchell has enthralled audiences throughout the Western world, earning 10 Grammy Awards – a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award – inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, and is ranked ninth on Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of the 100 Greatest Songwriter of All Time.
So…we’ve included a small sampling of songs from some of her lesser known and under appreciated albums; including Turbulent Indigo, Night Ride Home, and the scintillating Shadows and Light, recorded live at the Santa Barbara Bowl in 1979 featuring an all-star band that included the likes of bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius, guitar master Pat Metheny, keyboard phenomenon Lyle Mays, sax genius Michael Brecker and brilliant percussionist Don Alias performing music from the album Mingus honoring the late great bassist Charles Mingus. Tracks from this concert include:
- Edith and The Kingpin
- Goodbye Porkpie Hat [music by Charles Mingus lyrics by Joni Mitchell]
- Dry Cleaner From Des Moines
- Amelia
- Pat’s Solo
- Hejira
- Furry Sings The Blues
- Shadows and Light [feat. The Persuasions]
One for the ages by one truly ageless.
