Bali: Music & Dance

  • August 12, 2015

On one of our last evenings in Bali we were treated to exquisite performances of Balinese dance and music, featuring Gamelan – a traditional form of music played on metallophones struck by mallets, kecak or Ramayana Monkey Chant, featuring men chanting “cak” – often to the accompaniment of dancers in monkey garb – and moving their hands and arms, depicting a battle from the Ramayana where the monkey-like Vanara helped Prince Rama fight the evil King Ravana. Kecak has roots in sanghyang, a trance-inducing exorcism dance.

The music and dance for the evening was provided courtesy of Marcia Anderson.
