Impressions: The John Coltrane Quartet

  • June 17, 2015

Recorded live 50 years ago at the 1965 Antibes Jazz Festival, John Coltrane fronting his legendary quartet of Jimmy Garrison (bass), McCoy Tyner (piano), and Elvin Jones (drums) soar into the stratosphere on Coltrane’s original composition Impressions.

Although upstaged by the TV producer’s obsession with cross-cutting and superimposition, the piece transitions from bassist Garrison’s inspired pizzicato and arco solo, through pianist Tyner’s rhythmic and dynamic chording, and culminates with ‘Trane in full flight, solo building upon solo, coaxing almost unearthly sounds form the bell of his Selmer tenor. This is incendiary music played by masters, somehow (fortunately) captured here for posterity. It is just perfection.
